COI or Coefficient Of Inbreeding
De
inteeltcoëfficient volgens Wright dateert qua definitie al uit
1920! Wie zegt dat populatiegenetica een
moderne
wetenschapstak is? De Coefficient Of Inbreeding (COI) is een getal tussen 0 en 100%, en
geeft (grof gesproken) aan hoeveel procent van alle genen van de hond
afkomstig zijn van éénzelfde voorouder. Je kunt
uitrekenen dat een broer/zus-combinatie 25% oplevert. Een
neef/nicht-combinatie levert iets meer dan 6% op. Bij ons mensen moet
je bij zo'n "kruising" al dispensatie vragen.
Hoe meer inteelt, des te groter zijn in het algemeen de risico's bij het fokken: kleinere nakomelingen met kortere levensduur, aangeboren afwijkingen en ziektes en andere ellende. Waarom is er verband tussen de mate van risico en de COI? Inteelt vermindert de variatie van allelen (invullingen van een gen) in een populatie veel sneller dan normaal het geval is. En omdat in de rashondenfokkerij niet of nauwelijks geselecteerd wordt op echte "fitness" (= goede gezondheid, lange levensduur enz) worden ongemerkt goede allelen uit de populatie verwijderd. Voor veel genen houd je dan alleen de slechte allelen over. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat een gezond immuunsysteem gebaat is bij variatie van allelen in het individu: hoe meer variatie, des te reactiever is het immuunsysteem op de diverse prikkels uit de buitenwereld. Omgekeerd: des te hoger de COI, des te minder variatie (ook!) in de genen die met het immuunsysteem te maken hebben, en des te beperkter de afweer van het individu. Hoe meer gemeenschappelijke voorouders, hoe meer inteelt dus. Maar als je onverwante, op zich sterk ingeteelde, individuen kruist, zie je vaak dat de nakomelingen een stuk gezonder zijn ("uitkruisen", "outcross").

has family background for a disease and there is no available testing
to let you know whether he might be carrying the genes for it, breeding
for low COIs may reduce your risk of producing the problem.
With a lower COI you are lowering the probability of doubling up on
those unwanted genes you know are back there somewhere.
